Basilica di San Pietro Rome, Italy St. Peter’s Basilica is one of the holiest temples in Christendom and one of the largest churches in the world. Furthermore, it is the place where the Pope presides over many masses throughout the year.
Construction of the new church began in 1506, when the old church was demolished, and it was completed in 1626. It was consecrated on 18 November 1626. Many famous architects designed the church, and the cathedral was named St. Peter’s Church after one of the architects. The twelve disciples of Jesus known as Saint Peter, who became one of the founders of the Catholic Church and were executed in Rome and buried where the church now stands.
