Who is the hero of every drama? He’s a man who is dangerous, good, cunning, and through many near-misses always wins! This is Constantine, according to many historical writings. His life is filled with bloodshed, reptenence , confusion, and a happy ending.
If suddenly you found yourself in front of a lion what would you do?
In Constantine’s autobiographical writings , he is always the impossible hero. In one story, Galerius assigned Constantine to enter into hand combat with a lion. Constantine won this small battle, without killing the lion, but teaching him a lesson.
In another story, Galarius orders Constantine on a suicide mission: a single unit in advance of a cavalry charge was placed under his command. The catch was that the advance unit’s trail led through a deadly swamp in the middle of the Danube. It was an impossible mission but Constantine finished it. He was a living Hercules. Constantine returned from the treacherous trek through the Danube to greet Gladius by dumping a beautiful Sarmatian captive at the Emperor’s feet. Constantine would not be beaten. Attempts to kill him in hunts and wars ended in terrible embarrassment for the Emperor. Perhaps this was how Constantine came to find himself in such a precarious situation in court. He was too powerful a man, too quick, too smart, too capable to be trusted.
